Prescribed burns aim to prevent wildfires in Stanly County
NC Forest Service is conducting a 720-acre controlled burn in Morrow Mountain State Park in Stanly County.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Fire officials are conducting a prescribed fires in Morrow Mountain State Park in Albemarle on Tuesday.
The 720-acre fire was intentionally started on Tuesday to prevent future wildfires in Stanly county.
“The burn objective is to reduce hazardous fuels as previous wildfires in the park have been difficult to contain due to steep and rugged terrain,” the NC Forest Service statement.
Prescribed burns are conducted to safely consume vegetation and other fuels that could burn in the event of a wildfire.
Personnel with the N.C. Forest Service, N.C. State Parks & Ember Alliance will carry out the prescribed fire operation.
A helicopter is also being used to monitor the impact of the fire from above.
Winds are carrying smoke northeast from the park and through the Uwharrie community toward Asheboro. Smoke is visible throughout the area, including on the WCNC Charlotte weather camera in Anson County, which is looking north from its position near Lilesville.
